What’s on my desk Wednesday: Gratitude Journaling 2018

4

My top 3 reasons to start a gratitude journal this year:

  1. November is of course known for its association with gratitude because of the Thanksgiving holiday in the U.S.
  2. #30daysofgratitude is a thing
  3. The Healthy Lifestyle Plan I have been following called “Bright Line Eating”  makes keeping a journal-preferably a gratitude journal– mandatory to the program

I found Susan Pierce Thompson’s book “Happy, Thin, and Free” by accident in my library and did her 14 day challenge last year in January. In the first month I dropped 10 pounds and then was able to lower my cholesterol and decrease some chronic pain in my back and legs. So I kept going, and by the summer had lost a total of 25 pounds. Since July, I have been maintaining and holding steady. But I have gradually started to…well Halloween candy. Enough said!

In order to re-zoom and re-boot Dr. Thompson recommends going back to basics -commiting your food choices in advance and writing them down, journaling, weighing and measuring food, and the hardest ones: no sugar or flour AT ALL.  These are the so-called bright lines that keep things very black and white and straightforward, reducing the number of decisions your brain is taxed with making every day.

It is hard enough to deal with every other kind of stress and decision, which is the main source of erosion of willpower, Dr. Thompson explains. Further, sugar and flour are not foods they are actually drugs. When removed from the natural, fiber lattice framework they grow in, grains and carbohydrates in the form of any kind of sweetening substance are highly concentrated and highly addictive! Of course, everyone has their drug of choice and not everyone is equally susceptible to every illicit substance– which includes those in processed food.

That is the very quick and dirty summary of the science behind the program. It also explains the rationale for the bright lines and how they restore your brain to its healthy, natural state when it comes to eating behavior, appetite, craving, and physical well being.

So, even though this is not a health or lifestyle blog but a scrapbooking, mixed media, and paper crafts blog I thought it might pique the interest of some of my friends and worth sharing!

ACS_0807One of my favorite mixed media techniques is to collage my backgrounds. I save magazine clippings of fun sayings and pictures which is a great way to also recycle!

Here are some pages I made shown “before the pen.” I used one of the Artsy Traveler’s Notebook Kits in my Etsy shop. I also used some scraps from my stash and some Tim Holtz distress oxide inks.

A Mini Album using the Meadow Kit

ACS_0530

Aloha everyone…today I am sharing a teeny tiny mini mini album that I made officially killing my Clique Kits August Meadow kit. At least I do not think I can squeeze out anymore projects but you never know- I still might. LOL. I really don’t want to say goodbye to summer, do you?

For this project I used the little glassine bags that kit contents are sometimes packaged in as a base for the album. I stacked them on top of eachother alternating which end is the open end and then stitched straight down the middle at the fold. The bags were 2.5 x 4 inches I think so the final album measured 2 x 2.5 inches- so cute and teeny tiny!

The embellishments basically all came from the exclusive cut apart sheet included in the  Meadow kit (and might look familiar to you since it consists of my designs some of which I have shared on this blog) I love that these exclusive print and cut sheets are included in kits now and do not require you to download and print anything (I almost never have enough color ink to do them justice)

I also used what remained of the die cut ephemera in the kit which included all of the title phrases I used on my album pages. By using this sheet and the matching ephemera it kept the mini album simple and cohesive. Here it is:

In each of the pockets I was able to tuck in a small card with additional photos and journaling to complete my album. I tied it closed with a natural jute ribbon and tucked it inside a small canvas bag for safe keeping. The photos I used for this mini were all from the month of August and reflected nature in our environment. It’s good to slow down and notice things like wildflowers and little creatures living all around us.

In the mood for Meadow

August Mood Board

Hey friends! Today I am sharing a mood board that I had fun creating from Pinterest pins I was collecting in anticipation of the reveal of the gorgeous and unique August Clique Kit Main Kit: Meadow. I wanted to post this over on the Clique Kits blog on Kickoff Day, but since that day was my birthday I was a little behind on my squad goals! I hope you like this board, and feel free to share it with your friends!

Here is the layout that I posted on the CK blog last week. The Meadow main kit starts with the spotlight designer Alexandra Renke from Germany and all of the papers feature either her amazing calligraphy or her amazing watercolor illustrations or artwork or a combination of both. The kit includes themes of not only florals and botanicals but also the artist behind the scenes. Thus there are many different facets to Meadow. It is inviting creativity on so many levels, and also invites us to think outside the box!

I really enjoyed being the designer on the CK creative team to add some exclusive designs to this kit. I wanted to add lots of color using the kit paper colors as a starting place and also add some of my own watercolor illustrations with floral and botanical themes. It is definitely fun to use die cuts made from my own designs.

Sunny Memories Layout

1

I am absolutely in love with the Sunny Memories collection by Zinia Amoiridou for Pretty Little Studio which I ordered to add to my kit box with my July Clique Kits. It pays to be a subscriber because there are always new products coming in to purchase at a discount and you also save on shipping when adding to your kit box.

To create this bright, cheerful layout I backed the negative of the dragonfly cut file I used in the layout posted here with 6×6 papers from the Sunny Memories 6×6 paper pack. Using both the positive and negative spaces from a cut is one way to stretch both the cut file design and your supplies.

This layout is about my daughter having her first sleepover in her new room of her own. It is a really big deal to her that she no longer has to share a room as she has grown up sharing rooms with sisters all of her life until now!

The rainbow die cut is from one of the Clique Kits digitals which you can find here to download and print at home- you get so many cute pieces in this set for only $1.50 and the colors work really well with so many other kits and popular paper collections.

You can download my dragonfly cut file here for your personal use! There is a png. and an svg. file available.

Thanks for stopping by and please share your project with me if you decide to use this file! Enjoy!

Clique Kits Limited Edition: This is Us

CK_ThisIsUsKit-05

Today I am really excited to share the Clique Kits Limited Edition “This is Us” kit and collection designed by yours truly! This kit features a combination of bold black and white patterns juxtaposed with fun, eclectic, pastel colored designs. Of course there are some cute elements like the sweetest little sloth and a happy bunny and lots of pretty doodled hearts! The pastel color range includes the Clique Kits brand colors in various shades and tints plus bits of green, pink, and peach.  Why a sloth, you ask? I say…why not a sloth? Sloths are totally my spirit animal! Is there anything better than chilling all day in a tree branch? The bold black stripes and other B & W patterns are designed with Erica in mind though I know there are many, many fans of this pattern. But did they paint it on a wall in their kitchen, like Erica? (LOL- yes Erica recently had an accent wall in her kitchen painted in black and white stripes and I love it!) Like Clique Kits style, there are elements that are bold, colorful, cute, fun, eclectic, sweet, pretty, and trendy.

This collection is available in the shop as a limited edition physical kit, a digital collection, and a physical paper pack. This sleek polka dot washi tape and adorable sloth felty are included in the physical kit along with an exclusive color cast designs acrylic piece!

ACS_0118

Here is a my very first layout using only the digital designs printed on my home printer. I added a couple of vellum ephemera from Cocoa Vanilla Studios Bohemian Dream collection which were in the past January Clique Kit called Rhapsody (unfortunately sold out) and a lavender colored acrylic piece from my stash that coordinated perfectly! I fussy cut the watercolor wreath  and splattered some black ink and some watered down Shimmerz Dazzlers I Lilac You paint available in the shop (Hint: This color is perfect with this kit!). I used some of the pastel patterned papers to back my photo as well as a tag that I monoprinted using a stencil, acrylic paint, and my Gelli Arts gelli plate.

I will save that process and tutorial for another day. For now, I hope you like this layout! And I hope you will head over to Clique Kits to pick up some of this collection. Use my coupon code GIA10 to save 10% on your purchase!
